FORT WORTH, Texas - The adage "Bad things happen in threes" has struck the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the third bizarre injury in three days has sidelined a key starter.
Wide Receiver Hines Ward was struck in the face by an icy snowball Tuesday when leaving the indoor practice facility at Texas Christian University. Ice chips in the snowball cut his right eye, rendering Ward with blurry vision and limited depth perception.
Dr. Andrew Ximenes of the Carter Eye Center in Dallas told reporters on Wednesday that Ward had a "micro-laceration of the outer cornea" - an injury he compared to a "severely debilitating paper cut."
"The eye will heal itself in time. Generally, patients with this type of injury must wear a patch for 10-to-14 days and will be fully healed in approximately 4 weeks," Ximenes said.
Fort Worth police, with the assistance of TCU Campus Security, are reviewing security tapes in search of the snowball-hurling assailant.
